Arthritis Care

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis technically means 'inflammation of the joint'.  However, this term is also informally used to refer to joint pain or disease involving one or more joints.  The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

What are the Symptoms of Arthritis?

Arthritis is most commonly seen in adults over the age of 65, but it can also occur in children and younger adults. Symptoms of arthritis usually develop over time, but they may also appear suddenly. Common arthritis  symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion.  These can range from mild to severe, at times limiting activities of daily living.

What are the Complications of Arthritis?

Arthritis can cause permanent deformities to the joints. These changes may be visible, such as enlarged finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on diagnostic imaging tests.  Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints.  It is therefore very important to see a specialist as soon as possible to discuss treatment options and prevent further complications.

What Can Be Done to Help My Arthritis?

There are many things that can be done to preserve joint function.  Learning about the disease and treatment options, making time for physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight are essential.
